Professional Acrylic Floor Paint for Concrete

Duty classification:
Medium Duty
Suitable substrates:
Concrete Power-Floated Concrete Sand & Cement Screeds Asphalt Tarmac Masonry Floors

System Overview

Acrylic floor paints are single-pack, film-forming coatings designed to provide durable, breathable protection to concrete and bituminous substrates. Formulated using high-quality resin systems, these coatings deliver consistent adhesion, UV stability and controlled flexibility across internal and external environments.

Unlike two-component epoxy systems, acrylic floor coatings cure through solvent or water evaporation and do not rely on chemical cross-linking. This makes them straightforward to apply while maintaining reliable performance for light to medium traffic conditions.

Breathability & Moisture Tolerance

One of the key technical advantages of acrylic systems is their vapour permeability. Concrete slabs without an effective damp proof membrane (DPM), or newly cured substrates retaining residual construction moisture, can generate vapour pressure beneath impermeable coatings.

Acrylic floor paints allow limited moisture vapour transmission, reducing the risk of blistering or delamination where minor moisture movement exists. While not a substitute for correct substrate preparation, this breathability makes acrylic systems suitable for older garage floors and domestic concrete where moisture conditions are not fully controlled.

UV Stability & External Use

Epoxy coatings can yellow and degrade under prolonged UV exposure. Acrylic resins, by contrast, offer inherent UV stability and colour retention.

This makes acrylic floor paints suitable for:

  • External concrete walkways
  • Driveways and parking bays
  • Plant areas exposed to sunlight
  • Tarmac refurbishment

Where long-term colour stability is required, acrylic technology provides a practical solution.

Compatibility with Asphalt & Tarmac

Concrete is not the only substrate requiring protection. Asphalt and tarmac surfaces remain slightly flexible and can soften under temperature fluctuation.

Rigid, high-build coatings may crack or fail prematurely when applied to bituminous substrates. Acrylic floor paints retain a degree of flexibility, allowing them to accommodate minor surface movement while maintaining film integrity.

Correct preparation remains essential, including cleaning, degreasing and ensuring the surface is structurally sound.

Traffic & Performance Expectations

Acrylic floor systems are best suited to:

  • Domestic garages
  • Storage areas
  • Workshops with pedestrian traffic
  • Light equipment environments
  • External pedestrian routes

They are not intended for continuous forklift traffic, heavy pallet movement or aggressive chemical exposure. For such environments, a high-build epoxy or polyurethane system should be specified.

System Selection Guidance

For porous or highly absorbent concrete, priming with an appropriate acrylic primer is recommended to regulate substrate suction and optimise adhesion.

Where higher compressive strength, abrasion resistance or chemical durability is required, consider a two-pack epoxy floor coating system.

Correct system selection should always be based on:

  • Substrate condition
  • Traffic intensity
  • Moisture profile
  • Environmental exposure

Technical Guidance & Application Advice

Acrylic floor paints for concrete floors rely heavily on correct substrate preparation, stable moisture conditions, and suitable environmental temperatures during application. As single pack systems, they offer quick drying and ease of use, but film build and long-term performance are directly linked to surface porosity and mechanical key. Substrate soundness, cleanliness and appropriate priming are essential to achieve consistent adhesion and service life in light to medium duty environments.

Are acrylic floor paints suitable for newly laid concrete or sand and cement screeds in garages or workshops?

Acrylic floor paints should not be applied to newly laid concrete or screed until the substrate has sufficiently cured and dried. Residual construction moisture can lead to adhesion loss, blistering or patchy drying. As a guide, concrete should be allowed to cure for a minimum of 28 days, with moisture levels verified where conditions are uncertain. Surfaces must be clean, laitance removed, and any curing compounds mechanically eliminated. Where porosity is high or inconsistent, a suitable concrete primer should be used to regulate absorption.

How should smooth or power-floated concrete floors be prepared before applying an acrylic coating?

Dense or power-floated concrete presents limited mechanical key and can significantly reduce adhesion if not prepared correctly. The surface should be mechanically abraded, diamond ground or shot blasted to create a uniform, open texture. Acid etching alone is rarely sufficient on tightly closed concrete. All dust and debris must be removed prior to coating. On very smooth substrates, the use of a compatible primer is strongly recommended to improve bond strength and ensure more uniform film formation.

Can acrylic floor paints be used externally on concrete walkways, forecourts or service areas?

Acrylic systems are UV stable and suitable for external use on concrete and similar mineral substrates where light to medium traffic is expected. They offer good colour retention and are appropriate for pedestrian routes, light vehicle areas and general refurbishment. However, they are not designed for constant heavy traffic, high point loading or areas exposed to prolonged standing water. Adequate surface drainage and thorough cleaning prior to application are essential to support durability outdoors.

What level of vehicle traffic can a single pack acrylic floor paint withstand in a domestic garage?

In domestic garages, acrylic floor paints are suitable for foot traffic and light vehicular use such as cars and small vans, provided the concrete is sound and properly prepared. They are not intended for frequent heavy vehicle movement, pallet trucks or high point loading from axle stands. Tyre heat and turning movement may increase wear over time. Where higher mechanical resistance is required, a two pack epoxy or polyurethane system should be considered.

Is an acrylic floor paint resistant to oil, fuel and workshop chemicals?

Acrylic floor paints offer limited resistance to incidental spills of oil or light automotive fluids if cleaned promptly. They are not designed for sustained chemical exposure or aggressive solvent contact. Prolonged contamination can soften or stain the film, particularly in higher temperature environments. In plant rooms or workshops where chemical exposure is frequent or heavy, a higher build epoxy or polyurethane system provides more appropriate chemical resistance and film durability.

What application conditions are required to achieve proper drying and film formation?

Acrylic floor paints should be applied in dry conditions with substrate and air temperatures typically above 8–10°C and stable during curing. High humidity, low temperatures or poor ventilation can extend drying times and affect film integrity. The substrate must be dry and free from surface condensation. As a quick drying system, over-application should be avoided, as excessive film thickness can delay through-cure and reduce overall performance. Always follow specified coverage rates to maintain balance between build and durability.
